Why it's important to treat the whole person

Presentation-style

  • Course Description

While an integrated inter-disciplinary BioPsychoSocialSpiritual treatment model is not a new concept, advances in medical science and the “westernization” of chronic pain treatment has tipped the scales toward a BioMedical model. However, many payers like insurance companies and workers’ compensation providers are finding out (the hard way) that not treating the whole person can negatively impact clinical outcomes, especially for chronic pain. This course will describe how addressing the physiological drivers of pain is an important component for recovery from injury and resumption of activities, and will cover how the different facets of the BioPsychoSocialSpiritual model can influences positive chronic pain treatment outcomes.

  • Learning Objectives

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Describe two or more differences between the BioMedical and BioPsychoSocialSpiritual treatment models; Identify the role of medical treatment in the acute phase of pain; Describe the role of prescription painkillers in the management of chronic pain
