• COURSE DESCRIPTION

This on-demand podcast CE course provides clinicians with essential knowledge to identify and support autistic individuals who have learned to mask their traits due to social conditioning. Led by Patricia Young, a neurodivergent topic expert, the course explores the complexities of autism presentation in individuals assigned female at birth ('AFAB'), including the challenges of late diagnosis, internalized masking, and the impact on mental health. Listeners will gain insight into key concepts such as stimming, sensory sensitivities, autistic burnout, and the intersection of autism with ADHD and other considerations. With a focus on neurodivergent-affirming practices, this course equips therapists with the tools to foster self-understanding, validation, and effective support for clients navigating their autistic identity.

  • LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Define high-masking autism and describe at least three ways it differs from traditional diagnostic models of autism; Identify at least three signs of autism that may be overlooked in individuals assigned female at birth; Briefly describe the impact of autistic burnout and list two or more strategies for managing and preventing it

Interviewer and Interviewee

Patricia Young, MSW

Expert in Sensory Processing Conditions and Autism

Patricia Young was diagnosed Autistic at age 60. She was a licensed therapist for 17 years, and she now provides online coaching to other neurodiverse folks. Her podcast, Unapologetically Sensitive, for 5+ years. Originally, Patricia identified as a Highly Sensitive Person, but later learned she is AuDHD (ADHD/Autistic) with a PDA profile and RSD. She shares vulnerably on her podcast about her personal challenges, and now includes sharing through the lens of AuDHD because she wants others to know there is nothing wrong with them, and that they are not alone. Patricia also teaches an online course for neurodivergent folks. Patricia is passionate to share what the lived experience of being a high-masking, late-diagnosed AFAB looks like, since there is such a high rate of misdiagnosis. Patricia loves kayaking, crocheting, and spending time with her family and her dogs.
