Get a better understanding of how to support a healthy coming out process

Presentation-style

  • Course Description

As LGBTQ adolescents come to terms with their own sexuality and gender identity they can experience lower self esteem, feel unsafe, battle depression, and often contemplate suicide. Multiple studies show that LGBTQ adolescents experience higher rates of mental health disorders than their heterosexual peers. It is vital for clinicians to understand the process of coming out, learn definitions of sexuality and gender, understand variables in family dynamics and cultural influences, and develop tools to better assist their LGBTQ teen clients and their families.

  • Learning Objectives

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Analyze developmental models of sexuality and gender and how they influence the challenges of the coming out process; Assess the effects of hetero-centric systems and biases within the structure of LGBTQ adolesent developmental phases; Apply therapeutic concepts developed during the workshop to the clinical setting with respect to cultural and social constructs.
