    Spiritual awakening promotes recovery from addiction. This course describes spirituality, the phenomenon of awakening, and the postulated mechanisms by which awakenings foster recovery. It then discusses the literature on spirituality and recovery. It concludes with a description of clinical interventions that clinicians can employ to promote awakenings in their patients and thereby enhance treatment outcomes.

    Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Describe the five dimensions of spirituality; Discuss two possible mechanisms by which awakening promotes recovery; Describe “The 4 A's of Awakening.”

Dr. Michael McGee is currently the Chief Medical Officer of The Haven, a facility that specializes in the treatment of addictions. Dr. McGee received his M.D. from Stanford University School of medicine and completed his residency in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. McGee has directed several treatment programs, participated in government-funded outcomes research, and has published in the areas of spirituality, addictions, and clinical treatment. Dr. McGee is Board Certified in General Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, and Psychosomatic Medicine. Dr. McGee is the author of the multi-award-winning “The Joy of Recovery.” He is also author of “101 Things You Need to Know if You’re Addicted to Painkillers” (in press). Dr. McGee has a private practice near San Luis Obispo, CA, where he practices a combination of psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. His approach is ecelctic. He includes psychospiritual interventions to compliment biological, psychodynamic, interpersonal, and cognitive-behavioral interventions.
