• COURSE DESCRIPTION

Intimate partner loss is a process that has some very different experiences, both for the surviving partner and those around them, than other losses. The dying process itself can lead to a better or worse outcome for the survivor, and a more or less successful goodbye. The grief process is informed by the dying process, and the partner’s ability to set boundaries and manage their grief their way. Therapists can alienate grief clients if they are not acutely aware of what to look and listen for and are careful not to impose their own grief bias on their clients based on assumed “knowledge” about grief. This course discusses how to appropriately address components of intimate partner loss, as well as discussion about the boundaries grieving partners need in the new world they are inhabiting.

  • LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Describe the circle of support paradigm and how it applies to grief, and specifically to a surviving partner; Name two ways widows/widowers may bring sexual intimacy loss into session; Describe the phenomenon of the ‘widow rules’
