  • Course Description

    This course examines negative beliefs and inaccurate thought patterns that often impact those in early addiction recovery. Using principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, clinicians can support revised belief systems that can help clients develop and maintain a “Recovery Identity” that reinforces the behavioral changes already made in getting sober. This interview course also briefly discusses the impact of spiritual and religious beliefs on thought patterns, particularly through the lens of the Christian faith.

    Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: List three common self-sabotaging distorted beliefs held by many people in early recovery; Describe the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behavior; Explain the principle of displacement to overcome negative thinking patterns

Addiction Treatment Expert

Marty has worked in the addiction treatment field since 1985, initially in several hospital-based residential programs, until co-founding the Genesis Program in Ventura, CA in 1993. Genesis is a free-standing outpatient program, offering treatment at the IOP and PHP levels of care. Marty served as Program Director until stepping down in 2018. Marty also has been in private practice in Ventura since 2007. His private practice, at Avenue Counseling Center, is located on the campus of Avenue Community Church. Marty’s practice is focused on addiction and codependency. He also does assessments for the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the local courts.

Elizabeth 'Beth' Irias, MS, LMFT

Elizabeth 'Beth' Irias (she/her) is a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and the Founder and President of Clearly Clinical. She has specializations in Clinical Documentation, Best Practice, and Utilization Review, and works closely with clinical teams across the US as a trainer and national conference presenter; Beth was formerly an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University in the Graduate Psychology and Education department. Licensed in California and Oregon, she provides therapy via her private practice to young adult and adult clients, members of the LGBTQ population, and those with addictive disorders. She has two young children, a super cool spouse who helps out with Clearly Clinical's tech, and a rescue dog.
