A systemic perspective on chronic pain

Presentation-style

  • Course Description

Historically, when individuals struggling with chronic pain and comorbid addictive disorders enrolled in focused chronic pain management programs, they often failed due to undermanaged or unmanaged symptoms of substance use disorders or mental health disorders. During this course, participants will learn the strategies for offering more comprehensive support to patients experiencing chronic pain management problems as a means to improve treatment compliance and outcomes. Chronic pain will be evaluated through the lens of Systems theory, and specific treatment obstacles will be addressed, including family saboteurs and the patients’ self-defeating patterns of behavior.

  • Learning Objectives

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: List three or more common obstacles facing patients with chronic pain and coexisting disorders; Describe the four levels of chronic pain that need to be addressed for successful treatment outcomes; Describe two or more common self-defeating reactions people living with chronic pain and coexisting disorders exhibit that may negatively influence treatment outcomes
