• COURSE DESCRIPTION

    This course will introduce the listener to an empirically validated method for working with couples to repair their relationship after there has been an infidelity. From the Emotionally Focused Therapy perspective, infidelity is an attachment injury. By understanding infidelity through an attachment lens, therapists can guide their client couples through a process that leads to powerful sharing of each partners vulnerabilities and ultimately to partners being available again for comfort and caring. A case example will be used to illustrate this process.

    Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Describe the significance of an infidelity to a couple’s attachment bond; Describe EFT methods and the Attachment Injury Repair Model for working in therapy toward healing broken bonds after infidelity

Dr. Nancy Gardner, PSY

Emotionally Focused Therapy Expert

Nancy Gardner, Ph.D. is a Certified Trainer and Supervisor in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an empirically validated method of couple therapy. She is a co-founder of the Los Angeles Center for EFT (LACEFT), through which se organizes training and supervision of EFT therapists in the Los Angeles area. Dr. Gardner is also a AAMFT Approved Supervisor and a CAMFT Certified Supervisor. For more than a decade, Dr. Gardner taught couple therapy in the graduate program in psychology at Alliant International University Los Angeles. She has presented at local and state conferences on the basics of EFT couple therapy, on affairs, and on therapist countertransference in couple therapy. With her LACEFT colleagues, Dr. Gardner published a DVD entitled Caught in the Struggle, which illustrated the therapist’s emotional struggles in doing couple therapy. Her private practice is in Westlake Village where she sees individual adults and couples.
