  • Course Description

    What does ‘Co-occurring Disorders’ mean? This course provides a definition of the term as well as an understanding of the unique challenges faced by persons who have both a mental health and substance use disorder. An overview of mental health diagnostic designations will be presented and data on the prevalence of substance use disorders will also be provided. The similarities and differences of both disorders will be discussed and information on the various levels of care that are utilized in the substance use disorder treatment field will be defined. The evidence-based practice of Integrated Treatment for persons with Co-occurring Disorders will be a primary focus of this course as well.

    Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Define the term 'co-occurring disorder; Describe what an 'integrated treatment approach' entails; List three or more similarities and differences between mental health disorders and substance use disorders

David Deutsch is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor. He has worked in the field of mental health and substance use disorder treatment for more than 15 years. He has been a Clinical Director for Telecare Corporation and Malibu Beach Recovery Centers. He has worked extensively with persons who have co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders as well as with the homeless mentally ill population in Ventura County. David has also worked extensively with persons coming out of the jail and state prison systems.
