COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course offers an emphasis on the four primary conversational techniques used in motivational interviewing conversations: Open-Ended Questions, Affirmations, Reflections and Summaries (OARS). OARS offers learners an opportunity to develop a common language or checklist of skills to begin their intentional practice of MI. These nuanced, skill-based techniques include both verbal and non-verbal responses and behaviors. Participants will learn how to define each technique and construct OARS questions and statements consistent with the MI Spirit. Opportunities for “in the moment” practice will be provided so participants can quickly apply newly learned material. A review of the research on the importance of adherence to MI-consistent techniques will also be provided.
