An exploration of how to provide TGNC-competent psychological care, with guidance about specific practices

Presentation-style

  • Course Description

As mental health moves toward an affirming Transgender and Non-Binary (TNB) care model, providers may struggle with knowing how to competently support the clients at different stages of care, from which name to use in the chart to how to create a treatment team that is competent and affirming. Historically, TNB folks are often misgendered and misunderstood in psychiatric and psychological practice. This course provides details on how to provide affirming and evidence-based psychiatric care to TNB adolescents and young adults.
Note: Please note that the terminology to describe transgender people is continually evolving alongside a deeper understanding of the categories of biological sex, gender identity, and gender expression. Use of various lexicon is specific to each individual and his/her/their self-identification. There is a disclaimer in the audio podcast episode regarding the use of various terms.

  • Learning Objectives

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: List four or more Trangender/Non-Binary affirming psychiatric practices; Analyze ways in which their own practice/agency can be more Transgender/Non-Binary affirming; Describe the history of Transgender/Non-Binary mental health treatment
