• COURSE DESCRIPTION

    This on-demand podcast CE course explores therapist reactions when clients express suicidality and examines how clinicians’ internal emotional responses influence treatment decisions, therapeutic alliance, and client outcomes. Drawing on emerging research and Internal Family Systems informed practice, the episode highlights how fear, urgency, and personal vulnerability can shape clinical behavior and risk management choices. Participants will learn practical strategies to increase mindful self-awareness, regulate internal reactivity, strengthen therapeutic alliance, and maintain compassionate presence when working with suicidal clients.

  • LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: List at least three common emotional reactions therapists may experience when clients express suicidality.; Describe how therapist emotional dysregulation can influence treatment decisions and therapeutic alliance; Identify at least two ways therapists can increase self-awareness and emotion regulation in sessions with suicidal clients

  • HOW TO TAKE THIS COURSE

    In order to receive a certificate of completion reflecting the associated CE credit hour, you must:

    #3: Achieve a passing grade on the post-presentation test (the test has up to ten questions and you must earn a score of at least 80%; users can re-test up to three times. After three attempts, users are advised to re-listen to the audio course in its entirety and then subsequently re-test. Psychologists who are seeking CE credit may not be awarded credit if they attempt to pass the post-test more than three times.)

Internal Family Systems Expert

Beth Mullen-Houser is a clinical psychologist with a passion for working with providers new to IFS as well as IFS research. Her professional journey includes completing a PhD with a focus on psychoneuroimmunology as well as experience in psychotherapy research, health psychology and traumatic stress. She has been an IFS-trained therapist for 5 years, an IFS researcher, speaker and consultant and staffs IFS Institute trainings. Her IFS public speaking includes the 2023 IFS Annual Conference and her presentations have included the contributions of IFS to effective and ethical clinical practice, the research process and effective supervision. She is a member of the Foundation for Self Leadership’s Research Development team including recent collaboration on a research article submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. She offers individual and group IFS clinical consultation as well as IFS research consultation.

Hanna Soumerai Rea, LICSW

Certified IFS Therapist and Approved IFS Consultant

Hanna Soumerai Rea, LICSW is a clinical leader working to expand access to innovative trauma treatment. As an IFS clinician in the Outpatient Psychiatry Department and Clinical Director of the Program for Alleviating and Resolving Trauma and Stress (PARTS) at Cambridge Health Alliance, she leads the clinical implementation of research on group-based IFS therapy. Her contributions to published research on online group-based IFS treatment for PTSD and substance use disorders demonstrate promising results for making effective trauma treatment more accessible.

Through PARTS, she has extensive experience working with individuals navigating self-harm, suicidality, and complex trauma, as well as those facing intimate partner violence, housing insecurity, and immigration challenges. As part of a community safety net hospital, she has developed culturally responsive approaches to trauma treatment for the global majority.

A certified IFS therapist, approved IFS consultant, and experienced program assistant for IFS trainings, Hanna provides therapy for individuals, couples, and groups, bringing particular expertise in treating OCD, anxiety, and trauma. She maintains a therapy and consultation practice in Arlington, MA, and remains dedicated to her ongoing journey of unlearning bias in all its forms.
