• COURSE DESCRIPTION

    This on-demand podcast course rethinks “codependency” by tracing its roots in 12-step culture and Al-Anon, examining how popular, conflicting definitions can pathologize ordinary caregiving, and clarifying why the construct is absent from the DSM. Listeners will learn to spot common double binds and stigma (e.g., “you’re powerless” yet “you’re enabling”), replace shaming labels with functional analysis and curiosity, and deploy evidence-based family strategies such as CRAFT within a systems and harm-reduction frame that centers client autonomy and cultural context.

    Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Briefly describe how the term “codependency” emerged from addiction treatment culture and Al-Anon’s history, including why it lacks a standardized clinical definition; Identify two or more evidence-based, family-focused approaches clinicians can apply as alternatives to detachment rhetoric (e.g., CRAFT, ABCT, brief strategic family therapy)

    In order to receive a certificate of completion reflecting the associated CE credit hour, you must:

    #3: Achieve a passing grade on the post-presentation test (the test has up to ten questions and you must earn a score of at least 80%; users can re-test up to three times. After three attempts, users are advised to re-listen to the audio course in its entirety and then subsequently re-test. Psychologists who are seeking CE credit may not be awarded credit if they attempt to pass the post-test more than three times.)
    #4: Complete the requested course evaluation.
