• COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course evaluates the influence of parental generational shame and how it can both subtly and profoundly affect parenting practices. Through the increase of mindful awareness, parental shame is explored and redirected in order to improve parenting temperament, communication, and presence for the good of parent and child alike. The emotional calculus for marginalized populations differ drastically than for those who have the emotional privilege to experience and express their emotions without fear of negative consequences. Helping professionals must consider the socio-cultural-economic contexts of vulnerable populations, as some clinical interventions might inadvertently invalidate their experiences and potentially cause further harm.

  • LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Give two or more examples of shame-based parenting language; Describe two or more interventions that will help reduce parental stress; Describe how generational trauma or shame can show up in parenting styles
