• COURSE DESCRIPTION

    This on-demand podcast CE course examines therapist positionality and its influence on assessment, case conceptualization, treatment planning, and the therapeutic relationship. It explores how intersecting identities and relationships to power and privilege shape clinical perception and interaction, while distinguishing cultural humility from cultural competence and emphasizing reflexivity, attunement, transparency, and accountability. The course also offers practical strategies for inviting client feedback, discussing similarities and differences, addressing inevitable therapeutic misattunements, and integrating positionality into clinical supervision and everyday practice.

    In order to receive a certificate of completion reflecting the associated CE credit hour, you must:

    #3: Achieve a passing grade on the post-presentation test (the test has up to ten questions and you must earn a score of at least 80%; users can re-test up to three times. After three attempts, users are advised to re-listen to the audio course in its entirety and then subsequently re-test. Psychologists who are seeking CE credit may not be awarded credit if they attempt to pass the post-test more than three times.)
    #4: Complete the requested course evaluation.

Cultural Humility And Positionality Expert

Wendy Ashley, Psy.D, LCSW is a Professor and Department Chair of the California State University at Northridge’s Master in Social Work program. Dr. Ashley received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) from Ryokan College and her MSW from the University of Southern California. She has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 1998 and has 30 years of micro, mezzo and macro social work experience. Dr. Ashley is the author of multiple publications (including three books); speaks at conferences nationwide and internationally; maintains a trauma informed, anti-oppressive private practice and provides antiracist training and consultation for multiple community agencies. She specializes in deconstructing intersectional oppression, privilege and racialized trauma to promote healing. Her pedagogical acumen centers on conducting and facilitating antiracist, culturally relevant research, practice and training with marginalized individuals, communities and organizations.
