Interviewer and Interviewee

Dr. Tamora Callands, PSY

As a licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Tamora Callands has spent the past thirteen years helping women understand their identities as sexual beings empowered to make choices that align with their values. Her research investigates how individual, social, and cultural influences impact mental health, sexual risk behavior, and sexual and reproductive health outcomes in both international and domestic low-resource settings. She has used this research to design and develop innovative, evidence-based interventions for young women and men. With a background in clinical-community psychology, Dr. Callands examines how risk factors such as food insecurity, HIV sexual risk behavior, and intimate partner violence, as well as protective factors like social support, adaptive coping skills, emotional regulation, and positive sexual values, are linked to sexual and reproductive health outcomes. In 2013, she secured a five-year International Research Scientist Development Award (K010009660) to develop and pilot test POWER, an intervention aimed at both fostering healthy interpersonal relationships and empowering women to establish sexual values that promote autonomy among pregnant young women in Liberia. Since receiving this award, her research has continued to explore socio-structural factors—including race, gender, sexual health, and gendered norms—linked to sexual health outcomes and risk behaviors among women.
