• COURSE DESCRIPTION

“Pull yourself up by your bootstraps.” Veterans may absorb this message from society at-large, and utilization of mental healthcare by service-members has been controversial in spite of social acknowledgement of concepts like ‘shell shock’. In this course, listeners are taught the challenges of engaging veterans in mental healthcare (including discussion about systemic considerations and accessibility issues like houselessness and proximity), and approaches that may be particularly helpful with this population. Listeners also learn to identify symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury and how to support veterans suffering from combat-related mental health conditions and moral injuries.

  • LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Identify the physical, biological and emotional changes that are associated with combat-related stress and trauma; Describe two or more common psychological disorders found in veterans; Describe types of mental health services most commonly available to veterans
