• COURSE DESCRIPTION

    This podcast interview course explains an approach to treating fears and phobias in young children that is based in a combination of Play Therapy techniques and gradual exposure. The approach incorporates humor, playfulness and creatively-designed play-based gradual exposure in order to reduce a child’s fear response. This course also discusses how this model can be utilized with neurotypical young children as well as children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Williams syndrome, or other neurodevelopmental disabilities.

  • LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Explain why play therapy-oriented treatment approaches are well suited to treat fears in very young children and/or some children with developmental disabilities; Give two examples of how the tools of interactive pretending and humor can be integrated into gradual exposure activities; List three or more play-therapy based strategic interventions for use in the treatment of phobias in young children

  • HOW TO TAKE THIS COURSE

    In order to receive a certificate of completion reflecting the associated CE credit hour, you must:

Karen Levine, Ph.D. is a Psychologist in private practice, and part time Lecturer on Psychiatry Harvard Medical School. She specializes in treating very young children with anxiety and/or ASD or other developmental challenges. She lives in Maine and sees children and families remotely. She was the co-founder and co-director of the Autism program at Boston Children's Hospital in the 1990s, and of the Autism Center at Cambridge Health Alliance. With Naomi Chedd, she authored 3 books, including Attacking Anxiety A Step-by-Step Guide to an Engaging Approach to Treating Anxiety and Phobias in Children With Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities (2015) Jessica Kingsely Pub, UK. She was the recipient of the 2012 Lesley University Autism Hero Award, and the 2010 Federation for Children with Special Needs Founders Award. She is on the clinical board of ICDL an international Floortime organization.
