• COURSE DESCRIPTION

    Sometimes, important medical decisions come at clients/patients quickly, with little time or room to sort through options. Other times, it seems like there are endless options... almost too many to sift. How should clinicians approach ethical considerations regarding client self-determination around medical care? What happens when the provider disagrees with the patient’s choice, or when you, the therapist, disagree? This course presents concepts of self-determination relevant to practice and explore ethical considerations of this principle. The speaker will share a personal experience involving medical self-determination and provide recommendations on best ethical practices to navigate these types of situations relating to healthcare.

    Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Summarize relevant professional code of ethics values and principles relating to self-determination; List two or more examples of ethical dilemmas regarding medical self-determination

  • HOW TO TAKE THIS COURSE

    In order to receive a certificate of completion reflecting the associated CE credit hour, you must:

    #3: Achieve a passing grade on the post-presentation test (the test has up to ten questions and you must earn a score of at least 80%; users can re-test up to three times. After three attempts, users are advised to re-listen to the audio course in its entirety and then subsequently re-test. Psychologists who are seeking CE credit may not be awarded credit if they attempt to pass the post-test more than three times.)
    #4: Complete the requested course evaluation.

    Course elements (including the course audio, post-test, and requested course evaluation) can be completed on a computer or mobile device via your Clearly Clinical account.

Diane Bigler, LCSW, LSCSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Missouri and Kansas with over 25 years of experience in the mental health field. Diane also has experience working in law enforcement as a Criminal Investigator. She has held clinical positions as an outpatient and in-home therapist, and clinical supervisor. Diane was an Adjunct Professor of Social Work for 10 years at The University of Kansas, School of Social Welfare and a Field Liaison and Field Instructor. She has also held administrative positions as a program Director and Coordinator. Diane is a popular local and national trainer on a wide variety of mental health and workplace development topics for clinicians and corporations.
