• COURSE DESCRIPTION

An American Family Survey concluded that approximately 20% of American couples are politically mixed, and 90% of Americans feared that a victory by an opposing political party would lead to lasting harm in the United States. This course equips clinicians with tools to navigate the complex dynamics of politically polarized relationships. Led by Lambers Fisher, an experienced couple therapist and cultural diversity expert, the course emphasizes cultural humility and respectful communication as essential skills in fostering understanding and connection between partners with differing political beliefs. Listeners will learn strategies to manage their own biases, address heightened emotions with couple clients, reduce defensiveness, and cultivate empathy, enabling couples to focus on shared values and relational goals.

  • LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Identify three common challenges faced by interpolitical couples and their impact on relationship dynamics; List and discuss two or more interventions or approaches for fostering empathy and mutual understanding between partners with differing political beliefs; List two or more strategies therapists can employ to maintain appropriate therapeutic objectivity
