• COURSE DESCRIPTION

Do you know why the ICD matters to the way we diagnose? The International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) is a health classification produced by the World Health Organization (WHO) for use in all 194 member countries. The United States officially transitioned to using its adaptation of the tenth edition of the ICD (the ICD-10-CM) as of October 2015. The ICD-11 was approved for use by the WHO in 2019 and came into effect in 2022, with many countries already moving to adopt it. However, many U.S.-based clinicians may be unfamiliar with the ICD system—including its coding structure—and how it relates to the more familiar DSM. This session will familiarize participants with the ICD’s history, purpose, and structure. It will review differences between versions of the ICD and elucidate the process of a country adopting and adapting the codes. Last, it will discuss some key differences between the ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR

  • LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Briefly describe the history, purpose, and structure of the ICD; Identify three or more differences between the statistical, clinical, and research versions of the ICD; Describe two or more differences in the purpose and development of ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR
