• COURSE DESCRIPTION

    This course provides clinicians with essential knowledge and practical strategies for identifying, addressing, and preventing elder abuse. Led by Penny Jacobo, a licensed clinical social worker with extensive experience in Adult Protective Services, this course explores the various forms of elder abuse—including financial exploitation, neglect, isolation, and physical abuse—and the complexities of mandated reporting. Listeners will learn how to recognize warning signs, navigate legal and ethical obligations, and provide trauma-informed support to older adults facing abuse. With a focus on clinical best practices and real-world case examples, this course equips therapists to be proactive advocates for vulnerable older adults while maintaining strong therapeutic alliances.

  • LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: List and describe at least five types of elder abuse; Describe the role of Adult Protective Services (APS) in investigating and intervening in cases of elder abuse; Briefly explain the clinician’s responsibility in reporting suspected elder abuse, including the principle of reasonable suspicion

  • HOW TO TAKE THIS COURSE

    In order to receive a certificate of completion reflecting the associated CE credit hour, you must:

    #3: Achieve a passing grade on the post-presentation test (the test has up to ten questions and you must earn a score of at least 80%; users can re-test up to three times. After three attempts, users are advised to re-listen to the audio course in its entirety and then subsequently re-test. Psychologists who are seeking CE credit may not be awarded credit if they attempt to pass the post-test more than three times.)
    #4: Complete the requested course evaluation.

Expert on Elder Abuse

Elizabeth “Penny” Jacobo, LCSW, graduated with her M.S.W. from SDSU in 2012. She is currently the Training and Program Development Supervisor with the County of San Diego Adult Protective Services program. She has worked in APS for 11 years as an intern, a line worker and a Supervisor. Prior to APS, Penny worked as a case manager for adults with serious mental illness who were also involved in the criminal justice system, in an ACT (Assertive Community Treatment) setting. In addition to her job with the County, Penny currently works as a private therapist, as well as a curriculum developer and trainer for other APS programs around the country.

Elizabeth 'Beth' Irias (she/her) is a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and the Founder and President of Clearly Clinical.
