  • Course Description

    Group counseling is a standard component of addictive disorder treatment, and group dynamics can impact how the group facilitator approaches these groups and the group outcomes. This course will discuss different approaches for running addiction groups, as well as cover some pitfalls of the group process. Participants will also learn the critical thinking skills necessary for effective group leadership, allowing the facilitator to successfully design and run a group, rather than have the group run you!

  • Learning Objectives

    Upon completing this course, participants will be able to: Discuss the role of group counseling in addictive disorder treatment; Describe two or more skills to use in an addiction process group to encourage change.

    Please note that this course is part III of a three-part series. This course can be taken alone or as part of the series.

  • How To Take This Course

    In order to receive a certificate of completion reflecting the associated CE credit hour, you must:
    #1: Have an active paid Clearly Clinical membership

    #3: Achieve a passing grade on the post-presentation test (the test has up to ten questions and you must earn a score of at least 80%; you are able to re-test)
    #4: Complete the requested course evaluation.

    Course elements (including the course audio, post-test, and requested course evaluation) can be completed on a computer or mobile device via your Clearly Clinical account.

    This high-quality and interesting course contains a one-hour, non-interactive audio podcast presentation which is available for free via all major public podcast providers. You can also listen to and download the file via our course player.

    Once you've completed the course, your certificate will automatically populate in the 'Certificate' section of your account; it will also be emailed to you. Heather Black-Coyne is a woman in long term recovery, and an astute Addictions Counselor partnering with addicted individuals in both outpatient and residential facilities for a decade. Heather participated on the CDPWS Board as Secretary, helped launch the annual NAADAC Conference in Seattle, and is currently the Clinical Director for Anchored Tides Recovery in Huntington Beach, CA. She previously served as the Program Manager for Northbound Treatment Services, an extended-care addiction treatment program in Orange County, CA. Heather holds a Bachelor of Science degree, and is enrolled in a Master of Clinical Psychology program at Vanguard University. She currently holds her CADAC II in California.
